A Piece of History
John Ebersberger and I just returned from Provincetown, MA after 3 weeks of Painting. I spent my time painting on the beach and studying the light that brought Charles W. Hawthorne to Provincetown over 100 years ago to open the Cape Cod School of Art, and helped establish the town as one of the great American Art Colonies. |
Jerome Crepeau poses with me and one of the many “mud head” studies he found in the walls of his home. This building was originally a studio to many Provincetown Artists including Henry Hensche. Paintings and newspapers where used to insulate the walls of the old studio. This study dates back to the 1920s and was done in one of Charles Webster Hawthorne's classes.

Above- This still life I completed over the course of three weeks is typical of the Cape School. I would return to it every day between 2:30 and 4pm when the sun was shining.
Above left- My easel and the still life is visable amoungest all the plants and flowers.
Right- John Ebersberger puts the finishing touches on a cloudy day view from the dune High Head. Provincetown is off in the distance. My easel is to his right. |
